Apples and Oranges

A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Dir: Stanley Kubrick
*****

What can I say that already hasn't been said? Well, believe it or not this is the first time I've ever seen it. I was always creeped out by the description about violent criminals robbing and raping at a whim but I decided to put away my squeamishness and give it a go...I'm glad I did! Apparantly this follows the book extremely closely with very little deviation. Oh, and I went on Wikki for some fun facts. Malcolm McDowell got bruised, broken ribs, nearly drowned and a scratched cornea from making this film. The actors sacrifice for greatness, eh?

Queen of the Oddballs: And Other True Stories from a Life Unaccording to Plan
Hillary Carlip

Eh...seems like working at NPR entitles you to a book deal or two. This is the sixth NPR correspondent book I've read in so many months. A woman recounts her experiences being on the fringe of the entertainment scene in Los Angeles. She also heavily details her many failed and finally succesful lesbian relationships. I was vaguely interested and it was an easy read but ultimately it felt like one big name dropping mantra. I was skimming by the end. I guess if you like to hear about doomed lesbian flings without descriptive sex and actor/singer encounters that go nowhere you'd like it. I was less than thrilled. Also it doesn't hurt to know L.A. businesses and streets/neighborhoods as well because she place drops? a lot as well.Yawn...

Throwing a Party: The Day After

My Halloween party was a smashing success!! I would say about 40-50 people at the peak and though I fell asleep at 2ish I was told the party went on till 5.

Having said that, I really hate throwing parties....

Booktastic

Miss Lonelyhearts
by Nathanael West

I rarely write about books though I read more than my fair share but now is as good a time as any! An advice columnist loses faith in religion and humanity, becoming morally and spiritually bankrupt. He is shunning his girlfriend, being sex teased by his bosses wife, harrassed by his boss, and stalked by fans of his bylines. There are no happy endings here and life continues it's misery until a bitter demise. I absolutely loved this novella as it is sexy, honest and the characters are very fleshed out for the shortness of it.

What I did Yesterday

I did laundry...exciting,huh? One thing I'm far too painfully aaware of is my clothes are literally falling apart. I rarely buy new clothes but I'm going to have to condition myself to the idea sooner or later or I'll be wearing tattered rags before long. Otherwise a quiet evening spent starting a Phillip K. Dick book, finishing a New Yorker, and plodding through a Nathaniel West bore...

Earth Day

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
Dir: Robert Wise
****1/2

I lost power for about twelve hours this summer and it felt like I entered the Stone Age! That was a high point of this film. I felt the tension and I loved the set up. The only slight annoyance was the kid and the aliens cheesy end times warning at the end. Gort rocks!!!!!

Gorgonomics

Gorgo (1961)
Dir: Eugène Lourié
****
Don't mess with my baby!! Very fun romp and it is great to see the destruction of London. The special effects are dated but for the day people must have been screaming in fear and/or glee. I remember seeing this as a kid and it absolutely floored me. Also, I'm comfortable enough in my sexuality to say that this man is the equivalent of dreamy!

Monster Mayhem

Rodan/Sora no daikaijû Radon (1956)
Dir: Ishirô Honda
***1/2

I've been feeding the brunt of my madness with a heaping selection of Toho and American monster films from the fifties till now. Rodan is an earlier Toho dish that satisfies on many levels. The first insallment of Rodan involves the creation of a mutated Pteranodon. Well, two actually. This movie takes itself very seriously and uses science as the basis for the birth of the deadly creatures. My only complaints is there were one too many uses of limited stock footage and the DVD was dubbed. I hate that.

The fussin' an' a fightin'

Persepolis Volume One is on order and I for one can't wait to see what all the fuss is about...
