Alligator (1980)
Dir: Lewis Teague
*****
I remember as a child watching the scene where those bullies dressed in their best pirate regalia push the obviously mentally and dexterously challenged boy into the pool. The horror of dismemberment followed. The adult me was still a little sickened, even after years of being hardened to television and film violence. What makes this so enjoyable? This movie is chocked full of counterculture, current event parables(a little dumping of pharmaceutical waste into our drinking system, anyone?) and the most twisted, memorable characters you could ever find in a movie not directed by Terry Gilliam. The hunter? My God, I could do no better! Seriously enjoyable, socially relevant and way more than your standard alligator or reptile flick. The Eighties "The Host" if you will.
